Hello members!
Please see below for some important information that was covered at our QCH members meeting on October 20.
TOA:
- Should be implemented on the units, if you are having trouble using VIP to submit your minutes please reach out to your manager
- If your unit worked different hours 0715-1915 for example you need to reach out to your manager regarding changing the master rotations as per Article J2. Otherwise, you are technically required to be at work during your scheduled time.
- TOA is only paid at straight time AFTER your shift (minutes 1-15). If you are over by 16+minutes you need to fill out to the blue OT slip.
- TOA is strictly for transfer of accountability, it is not for charting, patient care, or socializing with co-workers.
- I HIGHLY encourage members to only show up at the start of your shift. You will not be paid to show up early. If you are early, you can wait in the break room until shift start. If you give report to a nurse that is on the unit early you are still required to stay until end of shift. You can complete charting or help with patient care until the end of shift time.
We still need reps for A3, A4, ACE and B2! Please step up and support your members! Reach out to me if you are interested in being unit rep on these units. Elections are coming up end of 2026 and if you are interested in learning more about a certain position let me know so you can have some orientation and get an idea of what the role entails.
Workloads:
If you are concerned about workload on your unit please reach out to me and I can set up a unit meeting with me and Allison, our ONA Central Workload Rep.
Grievances:
Laura Gale L84QCHOHSR@ona.org
Ganen Mahendiran L84QCHGRC@ona.org
- We continue to accept grievances regarding reassignment (floating) consecutive shifts.
- Grievances need to be brought up to your manager and the union within 9 DAYS of the occurrence.
- Please fill out a fact sheet if you are a FT or PT member and you were sent home and not offered to bump or had a casual nurse working while you were sent home as above quota.
- Casual nurses cannot be working on the unit if FT or PT nurses are on layoff.
- I need mentorship grievance fact sheets completed for ICU, birth unit, OR and ER. If you are not getting mentorship pay, please fill out a grievance fact sheet.
- PT no master vacancies whether temp or permanent need to be posted on the job board. Please contact me if this isn’t being done.
- Nurse Educators who are working overtime. You need to fill out an OT slip if you are working more than your shift allotment, you aren’t a salaried employee. If your OT isn’t honoured fill out and submit a fact sheet.
- If you are in a PT no master (especially Day Stay) and you are NOT scheduled your 0.4 point code when a schedule is released please let me know! In order to make a change in this I need to show that it is a problem.
Recent union win:
- If you extend a shift (in advance or last minute) you now get paid the full amount AND get a meal ticket. Reach out to grievance team if this isn’t being followed.
- Example: scheduled a DE and then extend to a QB it is 7.5 hours + 4 hours. Previously the hospital just did 7.5 + 3.75.
Christmas Scheduling:
- Unless you are a nurse that works Mon-Fri and not normally scheduled to work paid holidays.
- As per our collective agreement you need five consecutive days off between Dec 15 and Jan 15.
- You need either December 24 0730 – December 26 2359 off OR December 31 0730 – January 2 2359. Unless otherwise submitted in writing (Christmas scheduling Wishlist)
- If this wasn’t followed on your schedule please email your staffing clerk and CC me and your manager.
- Christmas slowdowns
- If you are told that there will be Christmas slowdowns on your unit and if you are above quota you will be floated THIS IS INCORRECT. The hospital needs to follow short term lay off language: starting at most senior nurse offer vacation or unpaid time off, if everyone wants to stay start by sending home casual unit nurses first. If no casual nurses are working then starting with least senior nurse on unit offer bumping to a vacant position or bumping least senior nurse in bargaining unit. I am still meeting with the hospital to ensure this is followed
- If you aren’t making your point code due to slow down then please let me know. If your master falls on stat holidays or you were granted vacation then this counts as part of your point code.
Bullying and Harassment:
- Keep track and review the employee code of conduct and workplace bullying and harassment documents on the intranet.
- If you are having issues, you can reach out to your manager or write a document stating how the hospital policies have been violated. Be very clear with your who what where when and how narrative.
- Submit to jsturgeon@qch.on.ca and CC me.
General News:
- Central Agreement back pay and top ups should all now be completed and implemented.
- Any issues with accommodations or lack of RTW meetings please reach out to me.
- If you are working temporarily outside the union in a manager job or Occ Health etc. please keep a close eye on your start date. After a year you will lose ALL your seniority unless it is addressed by the union and the hospital. Be sure to notify the union and the hospital at least 2 months before your year is up so the proper conversations can be had.
