The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and other regulatory bodies have Standards of Practice that registrants are expected to meet in order to provide safe, ethical and quality patient/client/resident care within their scope of practice.

ONA has developed the Professional Responsibility and Workload (PRW) process to resolve professional practice and workload issues.

By engaging in the PRW process, you are playing a pivotal role in meeting your Accountability Standard for your regulatory college, while advocating for patient safety and quality patient care.

Looking for sector-specific resources?

Find Professional Responsibility Workload Report Forms (PRWRFs) and other resources specific to your sector, on the ONA Professional Practice webpage.

Resources

  • Let your CF or manager know about the issue and that you are filling out a workload.
  • Fill out workload at your earliest convenience. ONA has prepared some samples that can help on the sector-specific Professional Practice pages.
    • Remember getting the STORY is the most important part so you could more easily recall an event in the future. It’s not mandatory to complete each part.
  • Make two copies and submit one to your manager (place in mailbox or email.)
  • Meet with your manager. Only one person from the workload has to go, but anyone whose name is on the workload is also welcome to attend. You can also ask your union rep to be present at the meeting.
  • IMPORTANT: While meeting with your manager, near the end, the manager will ask if you feel the workload has been resolved. Answer YES if you feel you have come up with a good solution. Answer NO if you feel it is an ongoing issue that hasn’t been resolved. This allows the workload to go to the proper levels for review.
  • Submit completed workloads (with management comments) to your Unit Rep, PRW Rep or Bargaining Unit President.
  • Follow up with your Unit Rep, PRW Rep or Bargaining Unit President if you haven’t met with management about any workloads. They have 9 days to meet with you.
